The (almost) Painless Divorce:
What Your Lawyer Won't Tell You?????? ? ???? QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF
BEFORE starting divorce proceedings, particularly when you are just thinking about it and wrestling with the thought, ask yourself:
- Am I absolutely positive I want a divorce?
- Do I need a lawyer?
- Can I convince my spouse to go with me to find out about mediation? (Give her/him a copy of this book.)
If, after considering other options, you decide you need a lawyer, ask yourself:
- How do I feel about the lawyers I've interviewed?
- Will the lawyer sign a contract that protects my rights?
- Does this lawyer stick to the facts of the case?
If you're thinking of representing yourself (pro se), ask yourself:
- Is my spouse using a lawyer?
- Are there children or property to be considered?
- Do I need or want maintenance (alimony), or does my ex-spouse-to-be?
When you're trying to get organized, gathering crucial information, ask yourself:
- Do I have records of all our investments? credit cards?
![]()
- Do I know what bank accounts and saving accounts we hold jointly or individually?
- Do I have copies of our tax returns? marriage certificate?
![]()
and that's only the beginning . . .
